This household hint from "The Housekeeper's Dictionary of Facts" offers practical maintenance advice for gas and kerosene cooking burners. It highlights the importance of maintaining proper combustion—indicated by a clear blue flame—to preserve fuel economy and cooking performance, and provides maintenance instructions for kerosene wicks, advising against trimming in favor of wiping carbon with tissue paper or cleaning asbestos wicks with a whisk broom.
Original
Burner—Surely this needs no definition. Gas bills and cookery both are affected by the burner efficiency of your gas range, or your kerosene stove. Be sure that they are properly adjusted to produce a clear blue flame in the gas stove. Be sure that kerosene burners have daily care. It takes but a moment. First; don’t cut the wicks, instead wrap a piece of tissue paper about the forefinger and press down, the burned carbon making an even, smooth, compact wick surface. Brush off loose particles from asbestos wicks with a stiff whisk broom to make them last a long time.
